I’m Sawako Iwata (Sawabon), a writer and coordinator based in Palermo, Sicily. I introduce Japan to the hidden charms of Sicily through pioneering magazine features, books, and web media.
After graduating from Keio University, I joined Recruit Co., Ltd., one of Japan’s most influential companies, where I built a career developing innovative editorial projects in the travel media division — a drive to create original ideas that continues to define my work today.
In 2001, I became a freelance editor and writer, moving to Rome and planning, researching, and writing feature articles on lifestyle, travel, and gourmet topics for major Japanese magazines and web media. Since 2010, I have focused on Sicily, consistently producing in-depth features for leading publications, significantly raising the island’s profile in Japan. I have also authored several books on Italy.
In addition to editorial work, I coordinate TV media projects, corporate study tours, and custom travel programs designed to showcase Sicily’s hidden treasures. The annual “Sicilian Gourmet Tour,” originally launched through this site, pioneered authentic gourmet experiences in Sicily and has since inspired many others — yet remains a favorite among individual travelers. I also provide interpreting and translation services.
I run a popular blog sharing everyday life in Sicily — often with my lovely dog.
